Operator of U.S. flag vessels seeking qualified individual to perform duties as a Port Captain responsible for the operation of Roll-on Roll-off vessels within the Company’s managed fleet.
Port Captain duties involve coordinating vessel movements with customers, generating operational reports, ship position updates and coordinating the appointment of shipping agencies as necessary, as well as providing operational guidance to both ship and shore staff. This position will also involve the oversight of vessel external maintenance activities and ensuring compliance with applicable operating contracts and labor agreements.
A USCG unlimited license as Chief Mate or Master is required and at least 5 years sea time in one of those positions onboard large Roll-on Roll-off vessels is preferred. Qualified candidates should be self-starting and capable of performing the job with little supervision. This position may require foreign travel as well as being subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

At least 5 years work experience at sea, as Master or Chief Mate, unlimited, onboard a Large Medium Speed Ro-Ro (LMSR) or equivalent preferred. Related shoreside experience as a Port Captain is a plus.
This position is responsible for the overall general technical management of nominated vessels within the OSI managed fleet.
Serve as principal port engineer for assigned gas turbine powered ocean-going military cargo vessels (Watson Class LMSR's). This includes responsibility for the lifecycle management including maintenance, overhaul, and modification for the assigned ship in all geographic areas of operation.
Plans, directs and coordinates the maintenance and repair activities requiring industrial assistance for assigned ships. Takes input from various sources such Voyage Repair Requests, Casualty Reports, regulatory body requirements, inspections, condition reports, alteration requests, preventative and condition monitoring systems and other areas and integrates them into short and long term plans and schedules to ensure ship material readiness.
Determine, plan and schedule all technical work requirements for all availabilities for assigned ships. Draft technical repair specifications in accordance with company and MSC standards.
Prioritize shipboard work requirements against budgetary requirements and limitations. Estimates all maintenance and repair industrial assistance work packages and establishes initial cost estimates.
Serve as the assigned vessel's technical consultant to the ship's Master and Chief Engineer regarding ship's budgetary status, required and planned maintenance, scheduled maintenance, scheduled maintenance practices.
Reviews all proposed shipboard configuration changes for technical feasibility and cost effectiveness. Researches recommended equipment for all configuration changes to verify ease of maintainability, cost of maintainability, suitability, and effectiveness of logistic support.
Ensures that assigned ships are in full compliance with requirements of cognizant regulatory bodies and conform to MSC and other required standards.
Determine technical evaluation criteria for proposals for shipyard availabilities.
Requirements:
- Experience as a port engineer on U.S. flag commercial or military vessels (gas turbine power preferred).
- Education and experience as a marine engineer.
- Experience with drydock technical and financial management.
- Analytical, problem solving, time management, project management and decision making skills.
- Ability to respond positively to customers in an effective manner.
- Demonstrates teamwork, interpersonal and communications skills.
- Proficient in use of shipboard maintenance management applications, especially SAMM
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
- Knowledge of technical operations.
- A Secret Security clearance is required and the applicant must be capable of obtaining and maintaining that level of clearance.
- Travel is a requirement of the position.
- Overtime may be required.
- Shipyard and shipboard work is a requirement of the position where the incumbent may be required to climb, crawl, and bend to accomplish shipboard inspections.
